What is Card PT?
Have you ever gone to the gym and tried to
come up with your own routine but weren’t sure exactly
how to do it? Isn’t it frustrating to walk
by the magazine rack and try to decide which fitness magazine
has the best advice on what to do?
Card PT takes the guesswork
out of the workouts and lets you focus on getting in shape!
Card PT is something that I was introduced
to in 1990 when I was going through Navy Dive School. Over
the years of my enlistment, we used various versions of Card
PT to break up the boredom of our regular workouts.
When I started running Basic Training by Fish, I
would break out the cards and it was a great success.
So
is this just a deck of cards?
Absolutely not! Card PT is
something that has been around in one way or another for years.
Fortunately, I was able to team up with the guys at Hybrid
Fitness and we came up with a totally new approach to this
classic “game”.
By combining our creative energies, we designed
5 unique Templates that you can use
to create your own workouts. Each Template was created so
that you know exactly which exercise
is assigned to the proper card.
Bodyweight Template:
This is the classic version of Card PT and includes exercises
like push-ups, pull-ups, flutter kicks, and plenty of other
exercises that will work every muscle in your body. Most importantly,
you really don’t need any extra gear or equipment. Just
a pull-up bar and a few square feet of open space is all it
takes.
Sportband Template:
Sportbands are a great, inexpensive way to add some variety
to your workouts. Lunges, squat-rows, and other challenging
exercises will make you move in completely new ways. Don’t
be fooled though - sportbands can be just as challenging as
free weights, machines or any other apparatus. The great thing
about sportbands is that you can use them anywhere. If you
don’t have access to a gym or equipment, sportsbands
are a perfect choice.
Extreme Template:
The Extreme Template combines sportbands, bodyweight, and
free weights (barbells and dumbbells). We’ve also combined
a number of exercises for added intensity. While this Template
was geared towards the more experienced athlete, don’t
be afraid to challenge yourself!
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Template:
Many of the clients we’ve worked with over the years
are competitive grapplers or fighters. The MMA Template combines
bodyweight, sandbags, and free weights. The exercises on this
Template are designed to develop strength and conditioning
in the ranges typically seen in a grappling or MMA competition.
You don’t need to be an MMA athlete to try them, though.
Martial artist or not, the exercises will challenge you just
the same.
Kettlebell Template:
Kettlebells are becoming increasingly popular and they are
available in quite a few gyms around the country (you might
even have your own!). We’ve taken exercises that range
from beginner to advanced that will challenge the Kettlebell
athlete of any ability.
What
do you mean by "Templates"?
Back in the "good
old days" when I first started to use Card PT, we had
to either memorize all of the exercises or write them on each
card. Both options became tiresome because you either had
to stop in the middle of a workout and try to remember something
or you were limited to what was written on the card. The Templates
that we've created are unlike anything you've ever seen and
they allow for infinite flexibility
with one deck of cards.
Believe me, when
I say infinite flexibility, it's not
just some marketing gimmick. If you've looked around
the Internet, you might have seen different variations of
Card PT and most of them have cute little pictures or cartoons
on each card that tells you what to do. Here's the question
that stumped the guys at Hybrid Fitness and myself: "What
if I don't want to do bodyweight stuff?" "What if
I'm serious about my workouts and don't need a skinny fitness
model in spandex showing me how to do a an upright row
with a 5 pound dumbbell?" Even more challenging: "What
if I'm not in the best of shape and some of these things seem
too difficult for me?"
The Templates
answer each of these questions by giving you an awesome variety
of exercises along with alternatives on making them either
easier or more challenging. We
leave you virtually no reason not to start working out!
Here's a quick
snapshot of the book and templates printed out:
As you can see, the Templates are easily printed
out and are designed to lay out right in front of you during
your workouts. Not only does this make it easier
to know and see what you're supposed to do, but using the
Template Method allows us to create more Templates in the
future without going through the hassle of prnting out a brand
new deck each time.
Is
Card PT for me?
Are you ready to get in shape? Are you ready
for a workout protocol that will challenge every muscle group
and constantly challenge you, regardless of your conditioning
level? Are you ready to simultaneously boost your strength,
conditioning and endurance? Are you ready to keep your body
guessing with a training regimen that never repeats the same
workout or allows the body to get complacent with it’s
training?
If your answer was
YES to any of these questions, you’re ready to try Card
PT!
